Thomas Adewunmi University yesterday, 21st February, 2026 held its 6th Matriculation ceremony for the 2025/2026 academic session, formally admitting over 967 students into the institution.
The ceremony, held at the Oko-Irese in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, marked the official induction of the freshers into the prestigious university.
The Ceremony Procedures
The ceremony included the procession of academic staff, followed by the opening prayer and the national anthem. The Registrar, Kolawole Fisoye through the Deans, presented the students from various faculties, including Medical Sciences, Nursing Sciences, Computing and Applied Sciences, Arts to the Vice-Chancellor for the oath.
VC’s Address and Key Highlights
In her address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Oladipo congratulated the students on their admission and charged them to uphold the university’s core values. According to her “Matriculation is not just a ceremony, it is a commitment to discipline and responsibility”. She further described it as their “hard-earned success”
Satisfied with the institution’s accomplishments within a short period of its existence, the Vice Chancellor indulged in self-praise for these deeds which in reality are huge for anyone to truly acknowledge.
In a shock of breath-seizing revelation, she unriddled before the new students that at barely five years old, TAU is ranked 4th among all the 13 universities in Kwara State, 6th among all 168 private universities, and 45th among all the 312 universities in Nigeria.
“We are a sustainability leader. Our campus is powered by solar, and we produce up to 75% of our food through sustainable agriculture”.
“We have a College of Medicine, a School of Postgraduate Studies, a Centre for Distance and E-Learning, a Foreign Language Centre and we have earned the trust and partnership of MIT (who allow us to host a mirror of their OpenCourseware on our campus to serve students from English-speaking sub-
Saharan African countries), IBM through the SkillsBuild initiative, Harvard, Stanford, Cornell, UC Berkely, and, Microsoft, through edX, Google, through Coursera and the explore CSR and institutions across three continents”.
“We did not build all of this for our own glory. We built it for you, because you are extraordinary individuals in an exceptional institution embarking on journeys that will transform industries, communities, and nations”, she further disclosed.
In addition to these specified feats and documented successes, she exulted Thomas Adewunmi University as a university that:
• Achieved in four years what was planned for twenty-five years
• Secured the first Nigerian university partnership with Mentors Without
Borders, receiving N163 million in investment
• Won Erasmus+ Mobility funding from the European Union, enabling exchanges with Poland’s Lodz University of Technology Secured over $200,000 in grants from Google.
*Matriculation oath-taking*
The peak of the event was the administration of the matriculation oath by the Registrar, where students pledged to abide by the rules and regulations of the university.
After the oath-taking, the VC alerted them that the oath they have just taken is not a formality, but a covenant between them and the institution.
“While we commit to provide you with all that you need to succeed in your studies, we also expect you to abide by
the rules and regulations of the university”.
“Thomas Adewumi University has
zero tolerance for examination malpractice. We do not condone indecent behaviour of any kind, we insist on decent and corporate dressing, we do not tolerate bullying whether physically or psychologically”.
She went further to warn that they should remember that they carry a name that commands excellence, as such, walk in the footsteps of graduates already making history in medicine, technology and the rest.
Conclusion
The ceremony concluded with a closing remark from the Vice-Chancellor, a closing prayer, and the recession of the academic procession, followed by photo sessions with parents and friends.
