In a major breakthrough against violent crime in the Southeast region, twenty prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and one civilian passenger have safely regained their freedom after a six-day ordeal in captivity.
The victims, who were intercepted by heavily armed gunmen on October 1, 2026, were rescued on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, following a highly coordinated, intelligence-led operation launched by Nigeria’s joint security forces.
The abduction occurred early last Thursday at approximately 6:30 a.m. when the prospective corps members were traveling in two commercial buses from Ibadan, Oyo State, heading toward their designated NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states.
Armed bandits had ambushed the vehicles near Umunoha in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State along the busy Owerri-Onitsha Expressway.
During the first rescue operation, police teams reportedly managed to recover both vehicles and rescue ten of the travelers immediately at the scene of the ambush, while the gunmen successfully moved the remaining 21 victims deep into the dense forest terrain.
On the second day of the abduction, the criminal syndicate established contact with the victims’ families, demanding a N1 billion ransom, equivalent to N50 million per person, before later reducing the demand to N50 million total (5 million per victim) having being put under pressure by the security forces who were closing in.
Rather than yielding to the ransom demands, the Inspector-General of Police and sister security agencies deployed heavy operational assets.
Operatives from the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigerian Military later tracked the kidnappers’ hideout through sophisticated drone surveillance.
The breakthrough came on Wednesday afternoon when the joint security forces stormed the kidnappers’ enclave situated at Amakohia Ubi Village in Imo State.
Despite initial reports that the criminals had mined the pathways leading to their camp with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), tactical teams successfully used specialized hardware, including armored personnel carriers and bulldozers, to breach the perimeter.
Outmaneuvered by the superior firepower and strategic approach of the state forces, the bandits abandoned their captives and fled into neighboring bushes, allowing all 21 hostages to be extracted unharmed.
Following their successful extraction around 4:00 p.m., the traumatized youth and the civilian passenger were immediately evacuated to the Department of State Services (DSS) Hospital in Owerri, where medical experts are said to be conducting comprehensive physical evaluations and providing psychological care to help the victims process the trauma of the past week.
Top security officials, including the Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, alongside the Imo State Commissioner of Police and military commanders, visited the hospital on Wednesday evening to personally welcome and comfort the rescued citizens.
In the wake of the successful operation, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, has issued a statement commending the seamless collaboration between the Imo and Oyo State Governments, as well as the heroic discretion shown by the armed forces. He praised the families for their extreme resilience during what he described as a delicate, high-stakes human security operation.
Meanwhile, the Imo State Police Command has reaffirmed that the tactical teams will remain stationed in the forest zones, vowing to sustain the manhunt until every member of the kidnapping syndicate is brought to justice.
