MIIDEEKOR Environmental Development Initiative (MEDI) expresses deep concern and strong condemnation over yet another oil spill currently affecting Kpean community in Khana Local Government Area of Ogoniland Rivers State.
This new spill is happening barely months after MEDI issued a public statement on August 15, 2025, calling attention to the massive spill and fire outbreak at Well 14 in Yorla–Kpean. That
earlier disaster, confirmed by a Joint Investigative Visit (JIV), was traced to severe rust and corrosion of an abandoned wellhead. At the time, we warned that continued neglect of aging
facilities would lead to more environmental damage.
Sadly, our fears have come true.
Today, the people of Kpean are once again left to bear the burden of pollution they did not create.
Farmlands, water sources, and community spaces are being contaminated, threatening livelihoods
and exposing families to health risks.
This worrisome trend is not new. Earlier this year, B-Dere community woke up on May 7, 2025, to crude oil in their homes and farms. Ogoni communities continue to face repeated spills while the responsible authorities fail to respond swiftly or prevent recurring incidents.
MEDI’s Position
MEDI strongly condemns this latest spill and calls for immediate, coordinated action from:
• NNPC Ltd
• Regulatory agencies
• Federal and state authorities
• The operating company responsible for the facility
Ogoni land cannot continue to be treated as a sacrifice zone. The lives, health, and livelihoods of the people matter.
Our Demands
1. Immediate containment and cleanup of the spill
2. A full and transparent investigation, with public release of findings.
3. Compensation to affected farmers, households, and fisherfolk, whose means of survival have once again been destroyed.
4. Accelerated decommissioning of abandoned and decaying facilities, in line with the UNEP recommendations.
5. Urgent fencing and securing of all 17 oil wells in Kpean, to prevent continuous
leakage.
The people of Kpean and other heavily polluted communities in the Niger Delta deserve safety, not endless suffering.
MEDI stands with the community and will continue to hold all responsible
parties accountable until real action is taken to protect Ogoniland.
