It is with profound sadness that Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State announces the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland. Oba Adetona joined his ancestors today, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that has significantly shaped Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria as a whole.
In a tragic coincidence, Oba Adetona’s passing occurred on the same day as the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in a London hospital in the United Kingdom.

Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona was a distinguished royal father who ascended the throne in 1960, ushering in a transformative era for Ijebuland. Throughout his 65-year reign, he served as a beacon of unity, cultural preservation, and progressive development. His unwavering dedication to his people was reflected in his relentless efforts to promote education, healthcare, and economic growth in Ogun State and beyond.
Under his visionary leadership, Ijebuland experienced significant advancements in infrastructure and community development, becoming a model of progress in the region. His reign also elevated the cultural heritage of Ijebuland, with the Ojude Oba festival gaining international recognition, while further establishing the kingdom as a thriving center of commerce and tradition.
As the people of Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria mourn his passing, Governor Abiodun calls for a celebration of Oba Adetona’s extraordinary life and enduring contributions. His wisdom, compassion, and steadfast commitment to the progress of his people will forever remain etched in the nation’s memory.
Governor Abiodun concluded his announcement with a prayer: “May his soul rest in peace, and may we continue to uphold the values he instilled in us during his illustrious reign.”
