Thomas Adewumi University, Oko-Irese, Kwara State continues to blaze the trail in innovation and excellence. Our phenomenal student innovators, Team MedPatch, just clinched 2nd position thereby winning a #1.5 million naira grant at the Grand Finale of the 2025 edition of AFRETEC-UNILAG Innovation-in-Health Challenge!
From an initial contest made of 102 teams drawn out of 339 students from Universities across Nigeria, TAU students made it to the Top 14 teams from 9 Universities that made it to the finals. At the Grand finale event held on Wednesday 25th June 2025, at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, the TAU team made a brilliant presentation that clinched an amazing 76% performance to win the Second position.
This win is particularly fantastic as TAU is the only private university among the top three (3), the two other positions went to the host University, the University of Lagos.
Combining tech and care, team TAU, comprising of Nursing and Computing students built MedPatch, a hydrogel-based wearable device, powered by machine learning and Arduino, to tackle diseases like malaria and diabetes before they become deadly.
The TAU Team is made up of 4 students and two staff members as mentors:
1. Oluwatodunni Obafemi (Software Engineering, Team Lead)
2. Fonahanmi-Idris Eniola Omoboni (Nursing Science)
3. Ajayi Erioluwa Ayomiposi (Computer Science)
4. Adeoye Favour Adeyinka (Nursing Science).
The digital health innovator team were mentored by Dr. Farounbi Samuel, Director of TAU Career Center and Miss Aimas-Love Lily Graduate Assistant (Computing Science) for the 9-weeks long journey of product development, webinars and technical sessions.
This victory is not only a win for the students, but also a proud achievement for their mentors and the entire university community
